  Résumé Aim We propose a trait-based approach for assessing and mapping potential niche overlap between native and exotic species at large spatial scales. Location The Mediterranean Sea. Methods We developed two complementary indices based on ecological, biological and ecomorphological similarities between native and exotic species. The first index (FNNr) allows identifying areas where native species are the most at risk in terms of potential ecological interactions with exotic species. The second index (FGO) is species-specific and allows identifying native species that display the broadest functional niche overlap and range overlap with exotic species. We illustrated our approach using the Mediterranean coastal fish fauna as a case study. Results We found that endemic and exotic fishes had a similar global functional niche at the Mediterranean scale, that is, they filled the same functional space defined by trait axes. FNNr hotspots were found to be moderately congruent with exotic species richness hotspots. Higher values of FNNr were observed along the coasts of the Levantine Sea. The computation of the FGO index showed that the geographical range of a given endemic species overlapped in average with 52 exotic species. Species showing the highest FGO values displayed localized and/or fragmented distributions in the eastern Mediterranean basin. Main conclusions Our findings suggest that the number of exotic species alone cannot be used as a broad-scale indicator of potential impact because this metric does not account for functional relatedness between native and exotic species. The trait-based indices developed in this study can be used for other taxa in both aquatic and terrestrial ecosystems and should help environmental managers to set up local-scale studies on areas where the potential impact of exotic species on native biodiversity is the highest.

  Résumé Total lipid content and lipid class composition were analyzed in gonads, liver and white muscle of yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) throughout ovary development to understand its reproductive allocation strategy and to assess the relation between female condition and reproduction. A total of 112 females were collected onboard purse-seiner in the Western Indian Ocean from January to March 2009, from June to July 2009, and from April to May 2010. Gonads were characterized by highly variable total lipid contents ranging from 5 to 27 μg mg−1 of wet weight (ww) with a predominance of neutral lipids, mainly triacylglycerols (TAG) and sterol- and wax-esters. The different lipid classes in gonads described an accumulative pattern through the maturity process from immature to hydration phase. Total lipid content in liver varied from 10 to 21 μg mg−1 ww, and serves as fuel for yellowfin tuna reproduction. TAG and phospholipid deposits became depleted as the ovary developed, suggesting a transfer of lipids directly from liver to the oocytes during vitellogenesis. In contrast, muscle total lipid content was low and constant throughout ovarian development (2.5–6 μg mg−1 ww). Hence, yellowfin tuna can be defined as an income-capital breeder species for which the cost of reproduction depends mainly on concurrent energy income from feeding and only little on stored lipids. Besides, no significant relationship between gonad lipid composition and fecundity was found in females able to spawn. Finally, the influence of yellowfin tuna aggregation behaviour on reproductive female condition has been investigated: gonad total lipid contents were higher in females caught in free-swimming schools than in females caught under fish aggregating devices (FADs). However, these results did not clarify whether the influence of FADs on associated yellowfin tuna affects their reproductive capacity.

  Résumé Bifrequency acoustic data, hydrological measurements and satellite data were used to study the vertical distribution of

macrozooplankton in the Bay of Biscay in relation to the hydrological conditions and fish distribution during spring 2009.

The most noticeable result was the observation of a &8216;biocline&8217; during the day i.e., the interface where zooplankton biomass

changes more rapidly with depth than it does in the layers above or below. The biocline separated the surface layer, almost

devoid of macrozooplankton, from the macrozooplankton-rich deeper layers. It is a specific vertical feature which ties in

with the classic diel vertical migration pattern. Spatiotemporal correlations between macrozooplankton and environmental

variables (photic depth, thermohaline vertical structure, stratification index and chlorophyll-a) indicate that no single factor

explains the macrozooplankton vertical distribution. Rather a set of factors, the respective influence of which varies from

region to region depending on the habitat characteristics and the progress of the spring stratification, jointly influence the

distribution. In this context, the macrozooplankton biocline is potentially a biophysical response to the search for a

particular depth range where light attenuation, thermohaline vertical structure and stratification conditions together

provide a suitable alternative to the need for expending energy in reaching deeper water without the risk of being eaten.

  Résumé Currently, the hazard posed by pharmaceutical residues is a major concern of ecotoxicology. Most of the antidepressants belong to a family named the Cationic Amphipathic Drugs known to have specific interactions with cell membranes. The present study assessed the impact of eight antidepressants belonging to selective serotonin reuptake inhibitors or serotonin norepinephrine reuptake inhibitors by the combination of multi-approaches (in vivo, in vitro, in silico) and gives some insights on the mode of action for these molecules. Antidepressants were from the most to the least toxic compound for Daphnia magna: Sertraline (EC50 = 1.15 mg L-1) > Clomipramine (2.74 mg L-1)> Amitriptyline (4.82 mg L-1)> Fluoxetine (5.91 mg L-1) > Paroxetine (6.24 mg L-1) > Mianserine (7.81 mg L-1) > Citalopram (30.14 mg L-1) and Venlafaxine (141.28 mg L-1). These acute toxicities were found correlated to Log K, coefficients (R = 0.93, p < 0.001) and to cytotoxicity assessed on abalone hemocytes through the neutral red uptake assay (R = 0.96, p < 0.001). If narcosis as mode of action is typically expected during acute ecotoxicity bioassays, we showed by molecular modeling that particular interactions can exist between antidepressants and phosphatidylcholine, a major component of cell membranes, leading to a more specific mode of action corresponding to a potential acidic hydrolysis of ester functions.
