  Résumé Although marine reserves represent one of the most effective management responses to human impacts, their capacity to sustain the same diversity of species, functional roles and biomass of reef fishes as wilderness areas remains questionable, in particular in regions with deep and long-lasting human footprints. Here we show that fish functional diversity and biomass of top predators are significantly higher on coral reefs located at more than 20 h travel time from the main market compared with even the oldest (38 years old), largest (17,500 ha) and most restrictive (no entry) marine reserve in New Caledonia (South-Western Pacific). We further demonstrate that wilderness areas support unique ecological values with no equivalency as one gets closer to humans, even in large and well-managed marine reserves. Wilderness areas may therefore serve as benchmarks for management effectiveness and act as the last refuges for the most vulnerable functional roles.

  Résumé Biodiversity in estuarine ecosystems suffers from the impact of environmental changes and human activities. This mainly involves changes in temperature, salinity, pollution, habitat degradation or loss and fishing activities. The diversity of species communities is traditionally assessed on the basis of their species richness and composition. However, there is growing interest in taking into account complementary components dealing with species differences (e.g. taxonomic relatedness). In spite of their social, ecological and economic importance, the diversity of tropical estuarine fish assemblages has rarely been monitored by means of a multi-component approach under different human pressure and environmental conditions. We analysed the diversity of exploited fish communities (both target and non-target species) sampled during scientific surveys within four estuarine complexes in the state of Pernambuco, Brazil: Itapissuma, Suape, Sirinhaém, and Rio Formoso. A total of 122 species were collected within 34 samples. Overall, diversity indices and species models fitting dominance-evenness profiles mainly revealed differences between assemblages from Itapissuma, being the largest estuary with wide areas of mangrove, and the other estuaries. While assemblages from Itapissuma generally encompassed more species and individuals than the other estuaries, species were more closely related from a taxonomic point of view. In addition, a Double Principal Coordinate Analysis (DPCoA) established a typology of assemblages, useful for management purposes, and linked to particular fish families: it highlighted differences between Itapissuma, Suape, Sirinhaém and Rio Formoso. This method combines matrices of species abundances and differences (here taxonomic distances according to the Linnean classification). It was particularly accurate with a first factorial plane explaining 73% of the total inertia, while only 17% was achieved by a traditional Principal Component Analysis (PCA). Overall, this study provides an assessment of the state of fish assemblage diversity in Pernambuco estuaries where contrasted human and environmental conditions occur. It underscores the accuracy of using a multi-component diversity approach, with a multivariate analysis that is not yet widely used, for monitoring the diversity of estuaries for ecosystem-based fisheries management purposes.

  Résumé The depletion of natural resources has become a major issue in many parts of the world, with the most accessible resources being most at risk. In the terrestrial realm, resource depletion has classically been related to accessibility through road networks. In contrast, in the marine realm, the impact on living resources is often framed into the Malthusian theory of human density around ecosystems. Here, we develop a new framework to estimate the accessibility of global coral reefs using potential travel time from the nearest human settlement or market. We show that 58% of coral reefs are located <30min from the nearest human settlement. We use a case study from New Caledonia to demonstrate that travel time from the market is a strong predictor of fish biomass on coral reefs. We also highlight a relative deficit of protection on coral reef areas near people, with disproportional protection on reefs far from people. This suggests that conservation efforts are targeting low-conflict reefs or places that may already be receiving de facto protection due to their isolation. Our global assessment of accessibility in the marine realm is a critical step to better understand the interplay between humans and resources.

  Résumé The aim of this study was to demonstrate that fish larvae identified using their COI sequences offer a unique opportunity for improving the knowledge of local fish richness. Fish larvae were sampled at the end of their pelagic phase using light-traps set off the West Coast of La Reunion Island, southwestern Indian Ocean, once per month from October 2014 to March 2015. Among the 5174 larvae caught, 214 morphologically different specimens were selected, 196 successfully barcoded, giving a total of 101 different Barcode Index Numbers (BINs). Among these BINs, 55 had never been recorded in La Reunion exclusive economic zone (EEZ), and 13 were new for the BOLD database. Even if the sampling effort for collecting fish post-larvae during this study was relatively low, it allowed adding at least nine new species to an updated checklist of fishes of La Reunion EEZ.

  Résumé AimWe set out to identify the determinants of the variation in genetic diversity among fish species and test whether multi-species genetic diversity is randomly distributed in space. LocationMediterranean Sea. MethodsWe collected genetic diversity data from 39 published studies on Mediterranean fishes (31 species) along with the spatial coordinates of the sampling sites. We focused on microsatellite heterozygosity (151 data points) and mitochondrial haplotype diversity (201 data points). We used linear regressions to link genetic diversity and 11 ecological traits. We also tested for spatial autocorrelation and trends in the residuals. ResultsAmong-species variation in microsatellite heterozygosity was explained by three ecological traits: vertical distribution, migration type and body length. Variation in mitochondrial haplotype diversity was also explained by vertical distribution and migration type, and by reproductive strategy (semelparity). However, vertical distribution and migration type showed opposite effects on microsatellites and mitochondrial diversity. After accounting for the effects of ecological traits, no spatial pattern was detected, except for one of the species considered. Main conclusionsEcological factors explain an important proportion of the among-species genetic diversity. These results suggest that life history strategies of the species influence the variation of microsatellite diversity indirectly through their effect on effective population size, while the spatial variations of genetic diversity seem to be too complex to be identified in our analysis. We found very different effects of traits on mitochondrial and nuclear DNA diversity, which can be explained by the specificities of mitochondrial DNA (absence of recombination, maternal inheritance and non-neutrality).
