Résumé Sea-level rise (SLR) is predicted to elevate water depths above coral reefs and to increase coastal wave exposure as ecological degradation limits vertical reef growth, but projections lack data on interactions between local rates of reef growth and sea level rise. Here we calculate the vertical growth potential of more than 200 tropical western Atlantic and Indian Ocean reefs, and compare these against recent and projected rates of SLR under different Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) scenarios. Although many reefs retain accretion rates close to recent SLR trends, few will have the capacity to track SLR projections under RCP4.5 scenarios without sustained ecological recovery, and under RCP8.5 scenarios most reefs are predicted to experience mean water depth increases of more than 0.5 m by 2100. Coral cover strongly predicts reef capacity to track SLR, but threshold cover levels that will be necessary to prevent submergence are well above those observed on most reefs. Urgent action is thus needed to mitigate climate, sea-level and future ecological changes in order to limit the magnitude of future reef submergence.

Résumé Here, we report the new occurrences of four deep-water prawn of the genus Gennadas in the southwestern Atlantic: G. gilchristi recorded from the Mid-Atlantic Ridge region; G. capensis recorded from Brazilian waters off Fernando de Noronha Archipelago, Atol das Rocas and Ceará Chain; G. talismani and G. scutatus recorded both to Mid-Atlantic Ridge and to Brazilian waters.

Titre Bisphenol A in Eggs Impairs the Long-Term Stress Performance of Rainbow Trout in Two Generations Type Article scientifique

Résumé Salmonids are ecologically, economically, and culturally important fish species in North America, but whether contaminants in the environment play a role in their population decline is unclear. We tested the hypothesis that bisphenol A (BPA) deposition in eggs, mimicking a maternal transfer scenario, compromises the stress axis functioning and target tissues stress response in two generations of a model salmonid species, rainbow trout (Oncorhynchus mykiss). Eggs were enriched with 0, 4, or 40 ng of BPA, fertilized, and reared in clean water for two generations. The fish were subjected to an acute stressor after a year in both generations to test their stress performances. Trout raised from BPA-enriched eggs showed impaired stressor-mediated plasma cortisol and lactate response in the Fl and F2 generations, respectively. Key genes involved in cortisol biosynthesis in the head kidney, as well as stress- and growth-related transcripts in the liver and muscle, were impacted either in the F1 and/or F2 generations. Our results underscore the long-term impact associated with BPA in eggs, mimicking a maternal transfer scenario, on the stress performance of trout in two generations. The results highlight the need for developing novel biomarkers to predict long-term and generational toxicities in salmonids.

Résumé Gene expression of key ion transporters (the Na+/K+-ATPase NKA, the Na+, K+-2Cl(-) cotransporter NKCC1, and CFTR) in the gills, opercular inner epithelium, and pseudobranch of European seabass juveniles (Dicentrarchus labrax) were studied after acute transfer up to 4days from seawater (SW) to freshwater (FW). The functional remodeling of these organs was also studied. Handling stress (SW to SW transfer) rapidly induced a transcript level decrease for the three ion transporters in the gills and operculum. NKA and CFTR relative expression level were stable, but in the pseudobranch, NKCC1 transcript levels increased (up to 2.4-fold). Transfer to FW induced even more organ-specific responses. In the gills, a 1.8-fold increase for NKA transcript levels occurs within 4days post transfer with also a general decrease for CFTR and NKCC1. In the operculum, transcript levels are only slightly modified. In the pseudobranch, there is a transient NKCC1 increase followed by 0.6-fold decrease and 0.8-fold CFTR decrease. FW transfer also induced a density decrease for the opercular ionocytes and goblet cells. Therefore, gills and operculum display similar trends in SW-fish but have different responses in FW-transferred fish. Also, the pseudobranch presents contrasting response both in SW and in FW, most probably due to the high density of a cell type that is morphologically and functionally different compared to the typical gill-type ionocyte. This pseudobranch-type ionocyte could be involved in blood acid-base regulation masking a minor osmotic regulatory capacity of this organ compared to the gills.

Résumé We compiled and analysed logbook data from the French trawl albacore fishery covering the period 1991-2015. The dataset comprised catch and effort data for the French fleet operating in the Bay of Biscay and Celtic Sea, as well as spatiotemporal and gear characteristics. Generalized linear modelling was used to model spatial, seasonal, environmental, and gear covariates of fleet CPUE rates. A long-term index of relative abundance is provided that can be integrated into the stock assessment of North Atlantic albacore. The analysis revealed higher albacore CPUE associated with relatively low sea surface temperature and distinct seasonal effects. The derived abundance trend for the French trawl fishery agreed with the estimated time series of stock abundance from recent assessments.
