Titre Unpredictability in food supply during early life influences growth and boldness in European seabass, Dicentrarchus labrax Type Article scientifique

Résumé Biological variability is no longer considered as statistical noise, but rather as an adaptive benefit. This variability comes from consistent differences in behavioral and physiological responses among individuals to a changing/challenging environment, named “coping style”, “temperament” or “personality”. Many studies have described how to characterize personality traits and how to assess their consistency over time and between different contexts; however, little is known about the environmental factors shaping personality development. Because contrasting personalities are maintained with evolution, this lead to the widespread assumption that genes play a predominant role in personality. In many cases, personality traits are however also likely to be determined by individual experience, which is probably at least as important as genetics in shaping personality. The aim of this study was to assess how environmental variability (herein food predictability) impacts behavioral responses, particularly the shyness-boldness axis, one of the most widely shared animal personality trait. Here, we reared juvenile seabass (95 days old) from two divergent strains selected for feed deprivation tolerance under standard conditions for 40 days. Thereafter, we submitted them to two feeding treatments (Predictable versus Unpredictable) starting at 135 dph and lasting 60 days. Seabass reared under a predictable food supply (PFS) grew faster and were shyer than fish reared under an unpredictable food supply (UFS) (i.e. they took more time to exit the refuge zone of a Z-maze; UFS: 132.47 ± 34.63 s; PFS: 336.79 ± 56.97 s) but their exploration tendency was similar. We also examined the behavioral responses of these fish facing a hypoxic challenge. Hypoxia tolerance results were consistent before and after the two feeding treatments. Our findings show the importance of early environmental experience as a driving force shaping boldness. In addition, we provide further evidence that predictable feeding time should be respected in studies assessing essential functions such as growth and behavior. Although personality traits are partially heritable, this study demonstrates the important influence of environmental conditions and life history on behavior.

Titre The potential of near infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) to measure the chemical composition of aquaculture solid waste Type Article scientifique

Résumé In aquaculture, it is extremely important to determine the composition of fish farm waste to evaluate its potential impacts and to improve its reuse. Near-infra red spectroscopy (NIRS), an alternative to standard chemical analytical techniques, is a quick non-invasive method to assess physical and chemical composition, reducing the cost of routine analysis. We developed NIRS calibration models for organic matter (OM), total organic carbon (TOC), total organic nitrogen (TON), the carbon/nitrogen ratio (C/N), total phosphorus (TP) and the lipid content of marine fish particulate waste. To obtain a wide range of compositions of fish waste, decomposition time, feed loss, and inter-specific variations were taken into account. The NIRS calibration models were built using three sub-datasets: in Scenario 1) the calibration was species-specific, including only seabass waste (SeabassWaste), in Scenario 2), the calibration included data from two other species (MultiSpeciesWaste) and in Scenario 3), the general calibration included all data as well as simulation of extreme feed loss (up to 50%) (Faeces&Feed). All calibrations performed using either dried or wet samples gave equations with high coefficients of determination (R2) and reasonably low standard error of cross validation (SECV) values for all parameters tested, except for TP due the high proportion of mineral P.

Résumé The responses of European sea bass to temperature increase and salinity decrease were investigated measuring mRNA expression levels of main genes involved in ion transport. Juvenile fish were pre-acclimated to seawater (SW) at 18 degrees C (temperate) or 24 degrees C (warm) for two weeks and then transferred for two weeks to either fresh water (FW) or SW at the respective temperature. Unlike temperate conditions, there is no change in Na+/K+-ATPase ala (nka ala) and Na+/H+ exchanger 3 (nhe3) mRNA expression following FW transfer in warm conditions. This is linked to the high expression of these genes in warm SW compared to temperate SW. Na+/Cl--cotransporter (ncc2a) expression however is increased following FW transfer in temperate and warm conditions. Main transporters involved in ion excretion (Na+/K+/2Cl-1( )cotransporter, nkcc1 and cystic fibrosis transmembrane conductance regulator, cftr) as well as nitrogen excretion (Rh-glycoproteins, rhcg1 and rhbg) and acid-base regulation (V-H+-ATPase, vha-a and b) are highly expressed in SW warm conditions vs FW warm. Overall, our results suggest a higher activation of ion transport processes in warm conditions and more strikingly in SW. This is linked to a strong interplay between diverse ion transporters in order to coordinate physiological responses at the gill level.

Résumé Studying gamete biology can provide important information about a species fertilization strategy as well as their reproductive ecology. Currently, there is a lack of knowledge about how long sea bass Dicentrarchus labrax eggs can remain viable after being activated in seawater. The objectives of this study were to understand the effects of pre-incubation of fresh and overripe sea bass eggs in seawater and to determine the duration of egg receptivity. Pooled eggs (fresh and overripe) from four females were pre-incubated in seawater for 0 min (control), 0.5 min, 1 min, 3 min, 10 min and 30 min and then fertilized by pooled sperm from four males. The fresh eggs had a higher fertilization success than overripe eggs. Our results revealed a significant effect of pre-incubation time for both the fresh (P < 0.01) and overripe eggs (P < 0.01). Fertilization success of eggs significantly declined for both these treatments after 3 min of pre-incubation, which clearly indicates that sea bass eggs are able to be fertilized by sperm for up to 3 min after release into seawater. This study has particular importance for understanding fertilization strategies, reproductive potential, as well as reproductive ecology of sea bass.
