Modeling approaches are ubiquitous in the UMR MARBEC, whether of a mathematical, computer, digital or statistics kind.
Given the diversity of contexts (research themes, scales of study and type of data ...), the research objectives and areas of application, the modeling work conducted in MARBEC call on very different types of models: biological and biogeochemical processes models, ecosystem and end-to-end models, dynamic spatiotemporal patterns of populations, statistical models of climatic niches, trajectometry models, etc.
Their achievement requires in all cases, the implementation of a diverse range of methodological developments, computer codes and means which must be common to the themes in order to stimulate a research synergy.
The role of the modeling center is to implement, coordinate and reciprocate such technical means in support of the modeling work.
Among the needs to which the MARBEC Modeling Center actions can respond, we can mention for instance:

  • To identify and maintain codes: a number of computer codes and software developed via MARBEC (using R, Matlab, C, Java, Python, Fortran etc) are valuable scientific findings. It is necessary to identify, maintain, develop and distribute them within the scientific teams.
  • To develop and distribute codes / models : Some computer codes, packages, software and models, sometimes very complex are developed in MARBEC and distributed beyond the boundaries of the UMR (e.g., ecosystem models APECOSM, Ichthyop, Osmose etc.). This sharing of models requires a consistent technical validation work, maintenance, upgrading of code standards, and technical assistance to users.
  • To use supercomputing platforms : some modeling work depends on important computing resources (clusters Gorgon at the CRH, Caparmor at the Pôle Mer Brest, etc) that require a very specialized knowledge.
  • Methodological workshops :development of workshops and seminars on computer, statistical and numerical methods, facilitating in-house training, the sharing and transfer of technical know-how in modeling and quantitative analysis within the UMR as well as to our partners and students.

MARBEC MARine Biodiversity, Exploitation and Conservation, is a research unit which includes the staff of 4 organizations: IRD, IFREMER, UM and CNRS. Its objective is the study of marine biodiversity in lagoon coastal and offshore ecosystems, at different integration levels, molecular, individual, population and community aspects and the way humans use this biodiversity.
